2011-2012 Scoring Updates

Varsity All Star is proud to roll out the:

2011-2012 Scoring System

In addition to specific adjustments made to the scoring rubric, the brands under Varsity All Star have collaborated even more to create a consistent standard of excellence.  Our goal is, and has always been, to legitimize the sport of all star cheer so there aren't any surprises for you, your athletes, and your parents every time they leave an Awards Ceremony.  Here are some of the highlights:

Day 1 vs. Day 2 CompetitionCopy of UU_0027_A1_028.JPG

For all 2 DAY/2 Performance events, your FINAL SCORE will be calculated by adding 25% of your Day 1 Score and 75% of your Day 2 Score. With all Varsity Brands being on the same page, Coaches won't have to adjust their training strategy to reflect inconsistent weights. Also, parents will understand, going into every 2 day competition, how each performance may affect the outcome.

  Weighing the Score Sheets

Weighing the Score Sheet last season, each Varsity Brand took the 4 major sections of the score sheet and applied weights to them, so as to reflect their unique preferences.  This year, all categories are being considered consistently when tabulating a team's score.  As a coach, you won't have to stand up at practice in the spring and say, "stunting counts more here, so we're going to add another transition today" or "remember this competition focuses on jumps, we need to get those jumps up!" Moving forward, our weights will be identical—making your life easier.

40% - Building Skills (Stunts, Pyramids, Tosses)
30% - Tumbling Skills (Standing, Running, Jumps)
20% - Overall Routine (Motions/Dance, Formations/Transitions, Performance)
10% - Creativity (Routine and Skill)

 Final Score AND % Perfection

For our results pages on-line, every brand's rankings and results will include both the Final Score and the Perfection Score. Point Deductions and Safety Deductions will always be subtracted from the Raw Score to give the Final Score.  The % of Perfection Score is the Final Score divided by the Maximum Score possible for that level. Ex: If a Level 1 team earns a score of 54 (out of a possible 55), then their team is 99% perfect!

  Athlete Deductions

Deduction for Single Athlete mistakes (i.e. Tumbling errors) will no longer be the mathematical equivalence to a Stunt mistake. A Tumbling Bobble used to be worth a.5 and will now only affect the final score by .25.  And a Tumbling Fall was 1.0 and now warrants a deduction of .50. We hope to relieve some of the pressure that individual athletes feel when competing during their team performance.

In addition to the above, there are a handful of updates to the Difficulty Scoring Rubric. Please review the document prior to finalizing your choreography so that each of your teams goes into their first competition with the formula for success!
